Movember this time at Slovakia Ring

Driving in a fast car is cool, but a preventive urological examination is even cooler.

Bratislava, Nov 14, 2023 – Every November, Slovenská urologická spoločnosť and its partners join the global Movember initiative to motivate men to visit urological clinics on time. This year, urologists together with the Minister of Health of the Slovak Republic, organizations caring for patients and professional motorsport driver Maťo Homola started the fight against prostate cancer in an unconventional way - on a professional racing circuit, driving a fast car. The goal was to share with Slovaks that there are many "cool things" that men can experience, but the coolest one will be if they will be determined to attend a preventive urological examination.

A preventive urological examination can save life

November is a month of a prostate cancer prevention, the second most common male cancer. Slovenská urologická spoločnosť is appealing to the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of this disease, which, according to them, is crucial for the patient's life. "Data has shown us for a long time that prostate cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases when it comes to men over fifty. Unfortunately, a high percentage of patients have been diagnosed at an advanced stage, when treatment options are already fundamentally limited," describes the situation doc. MUDr. Ivan Minčík, PhD., the president of the Slovenská urologická spoločnosť. "We remind you that thanks to early diagnosis we can detect prostate cancer early and treat it effectively. Preventive urological examinations should therefore be a matter of regularity for men at age most at risk," adds MUDr. Michal Korček, PhD., 1st vice-president of the Slovenská urologická spoločnosť.

Early diagnosis opens up possibilities for precise treatment

According to experts, time is crucial in oncological diseases, including prostate cancer. If prostate cancer is caught in time, modern medicine offers a great chance for a pleasant life and, in many cases, for a complete cure. "Innovations in the field of science and personalized medicine today can fundamentally improve the quality of life of oncology patients. Today, for example, we already know how to test prostate cancer biomarkers, which help us choose the most appropriate treatment procedures tailored to a specific patient." describes doc. Minčík.

Every man at age most at risk is entitled to a free preventive urological examination. Experts explain that it is painless and consists of an interview with the patient, an ultrasound examination, a blood and urine examination and a rectal examination of the prostate. Men can get all the necessary information from their health insurance company. Organization called Liga proti rakovine is also offering help. "If men have any questions about this topic, whether in the field of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, but also from a psychological point of view, they can contact our free Onco-consultation, where they will be regularly advised by qualified experts," adds Eva Kováčová, director of the Liga proti rakovine, which is an annual campaign partner.

Movember on a racing circuit

This year's Movember of the Slovenská urologická spoločnosť and its partners started in an unconventional way - on a professional racing circuit with motorsport driver Maťo Homola. "It is said that some men in their fifties experience the so-called "second puberty" and compete in various "cool things." Fast cars are definitely one of them. That is why we are very happy that Slovakia Ring and Maťo Homola decided to join the initiative this year, thanks to which we were able to experience this kind of fun for ourselves. However, from our point of view, taking care of one's own health is still the biggest concern," explains doc. MUDr. Minčík.

The initiative was also supported by the Minister of Health. "The Ministry of Health joins the Slovenská urologická spoločnosť and organizations caring for patients with a clear message - prevention is the coolest thing ever. Our joint priority is to strengthen awareness of the prevention of oncological diseases, as well as to support their early diagnosis and subsequent precise treatment. We will discuss these topics with the Slovenská urologická spoločnosť and find solutions," adds Zuzana Dolinková, Minister of Health of the Slovak Republic.
